What is a Deposition? | Friendship Heights Lawyer

Video Overview

A deposition is a tool that your family law attorney uses to learn more about the other side’s case during the larger process known as discovery. Essentially, a deposition is a day, or sometimes two or more days, when you will go to the office of the attorney taking the deposition, or they may come to your attorney’s office.

During the deposition, the attorney conducting it will ask you questions under oath. Since it is part of discovery, they can ask a broad range of questions because the standard for discovery is anything reasonably calculated to lead to admissible evidence. In family law cases, which are often very fact-driven, this can result in a wide array of questions being asked.
