Scheduled for Saturday, October 14th, the 41st annual Fairfax Fall Festival will feature activities for all ages. Hit up the carnival rides in the SunTrust Bank parking lot between 10 am and 8 pm, or stop by the children’s stage to see such impressive acts as Rocknocerous or Turley the Magician.
- Pumpkinville
Owned and operated by a local Barhamsville farm, Toano’s Pumpkinville is the ultimate pumpkin patch and Halloween destination. Free activities include a corn maze, hayrides and several fall-themed games. In addition to enjoying a quaint day out with your kids, you can stock up on Halloween decor with their help.
- University of Mary Washington Ghost Walk
Every year, the University of Mary Washington’s Historic Preservation Club hosts an intriguing ghost walk, which stops at several key historic sites throughout Fredericksburg. Volunteers don historical garb, with some even floating to create a ghostly sensation. Avoid if your kids frighten easily.
- Art on the Avenue
Cultivate an appreciation for art in Alexandria, which hosts a popular Art on the Avenue event every October. Hit up Mt. Vernon Avenue to see silversmiths, fabric artists, woodworkers and several other talented Virginians. The event packs on the entertainment with four music stages, as well as artist demos designed specifically for kids.
- Explore More Discovery Museum
If the weather refuses to cooperate, head to Harrisonburg for a delightful afternoon at the Explore More Discovery Museum. The kid-friendly destination encourages curiosity and creativity with a wide array of unique exhibits, including a mock television news studio, a hands-on dental exhibit and a fully-functional science lab. Stop by on the first Friday evening in October for free admission.
