Richard Gere Breaks Off His Business Relationship with His Ex: Virginia Divorce Lawyers Analyze

Our Virginia divorce attorneys find it sometimes useful to scrutinize newsworthy divorce stories, because they can offer insights into the divorce process. Whether you’re recently separated, or you’re contemplating leaving your marriage, consider the sad and layered matter of actor Richard Gere’s divorce.

The 65-year-old actor separated from his wife of 11 years, Carey Lowell, in September 2013. Prior to that, Gere had been married to supermodel, Cindy Crawford. According to a very recent story in the New York Post, Gere and Lowell had been business partners running a New York bed and breakfast called the Bedford Post. But according to recent documents, Gere is now listed as the only owner of the B&B. Last year, the couple put their Hampton estate up for sale. Originally, it had been valued at $65 million, but the home’s price has since dropped to just $47.5 million – a $17.5 million decline.

And last month, Gere allegedly “flipped out” and “jabbed” an umbrella at photographers who pursued him outside a Manhattan courthouse as he was leaving a divorce hearing. Per one news source: “Gere – wearing meditation beads on his left wrist and carrying an orange canvas bag… nastily wielded the pointy black umbrella like a sword.” Another report from the Huffington Post said that Gere managed to use the topsy-turvy emotions from the divorce to inspire his performance in his latest film, “Time Out of Mind,” in which he plays a homeless man struggling to survive on New York streets. He told the Lincoln Center’s Film Society “what probably really helped me was that I was right in the middle of a divorce…the emotions were right on the surface.”

This complex portrait of a couple in the throes of an expensive, emotional, and very public separation sounds accurate. Divorce can catalyze artistic and spiritual growth. It can also lead to fighting and emotional outbursts. To make sense of your rights and options, call an experienced Fairfax, Virginia divorce lawyer with DiPietro Law Group, PLLC at (888) 530-4374.
